Supplier of Fine Wool

Orana Wools sells beautiful thick  16 ply pure Australian wool for children learning to knit and crochet and all craft enthusiasts.

A good tension for 16 ply is achieved by using 6mm knitting needles which, in Waldorf Schools, are made by the children sanding, waxing and polishing 6 mm wooden dowel themselves. Children practice their knitting and crochet skills throughout their primary school years, making all sorts of practical projects. Our thick 16 ply assists children by making the larger stitches more easily manipulated and there being fewer stitches necessary to create the desired size, projects progress quite quickly.

Orana Wools was set up in 1995 by David and Ursula Hatton to supply beautiful, soft pure Australian merino wool for children in Waldorf Steiner Schools to learn to knit and crochet.
The colours were selected to match natural plant colours.
Our range began with colours of the rainbow plus natural undyed cream, fawn, chocolate brown, rusty brown squirrel, chocolate brown and natural white, and has since been extended to 22 colours to include other shades the children enjoy.

We stock 16 ply thick wool which comes in 250gm skeins and is used by children in kindergarten and through the primary classes, and 8 ply in the same range of colours. This thinner wool is often used for children learning to sew.
